Few science curricula explore the concept of characterization and the development of scientific tools. During Probing the Unknown, students solve a design problem that promotes critical thinking. Students use probes in order to characterize an unknown world. The concept of probing is modeled after the use of Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) technology.
Students will:
• Apply scientific knowledge of determining properties using past experience and new ones learned in the classroom.
• Characterize matter - describe the relationship between properties and structure.
